Why do I need a Sound Insulation Test?

Building regulations require a minimum performance for Sound Insulation between adjacent spaces, for the purpose of providing reasonable living conditions for occupants. It is a mandatory requirement for both residential and non-residential buildings to be tested where Sound Insulation performance needs to be demonstrated. The regulations can be found in Approved Document E 2003 for England and Wales.

When do we perform a Sound Insulation Test?

Preparing for sound insulation testing requires several important steps to ensure accurate results and compliance with acoustic standards. Proper preparation is vital for effective testing and achieving the desired soundproofing standards in your building.

All relevant construction tasks, including the installation of doors, windows, and fixtures that affect sound transmission, should be completed. The testing area should be cleared of furniture and other items to prevent any interference with acoustics.
Gaps or holes in walls, ceilings, and floors must be sealed to avoid sound flanking. All mechanical systems, such as HVAC, need to be turned off to eliminate background noise during testing. Maintaining normal room conditions in terms of temperature and humidity is essential.

JG Acoustics will send you a requirements for testing guide to ensure your site can be ready for testing upon our arrival.
