Occupational Noise / Noise at Work

JG Acoustics offers noise at work assessments for various scenarios and applications. While some assessments may be more intricate than others, it is crucial to select the appropriate assessment or sampling method. Acoustic consultants collaborate with managers to pinpoint processes, duration of noise exposure, and measured noise levels to assess potential health risks and to implement mitigation measures.

Where processes are easily defined, short/ worst case measurements can be taken of all the relevant processes or machinery. The daily or weekly noise exposure level can be calculated based on the time of that exposure to determine a risk level.

Another option is to utilize dose badges (dosimeters) that staff can wear. These badges can offer valuable information about the usual daily work routine and potential exposure risks in the short term, or they can serve as an alarm system for prolonged periods, alerting when noise exposure reaches critical levels.

The most suitable assessment methodology will be determined by the type of work and the consultant's best judgement. Each situation may differ greatly.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 (Noise Regulations 2005) require employers to prevent or reduce risks to health and safety from exposure to noise at work. Employees have duties under the Regulations too. The Noise Regulations require you to take specific action at certain action values. These relate to:

  • the levels of exposure to noise of your employees averaged over a working day or week; and

  • the maximum noise (peak sound pressure) to which employees are exposed in a working day.

The values are:

  • lower exposure action values:

  • daily or weekly exposure of 80 dB(A)

  • peak sound pressure of 135 dB(C)

  • upper exposure action values:

  • daily or weekly exposure of 85 dB(A)

  • peak sound pressure of 137 dB(C)

There are also levels of noise exposure which must not be exceeded. These are called exposure limit values:

  • daily or weekly exposure of 87 dB(A)

  • peak sound pressure of 140 dB(C)

JG Acoustics have the competence and experience needed to conduct Noise at Work Surveys following HSE guidelines and regulations. Our team of acoustic experts will create a comprehensive technical report that is presented in a clear and understandable format, to help meet the compliance standards of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Noise at Work regulationss. We are available to collaborate with your company to provide guidance on implementing noise management strategies and to carry out surveillance visits as required.
